SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It is the leading cause of death in the United States and it’s not overdoses or heart disease. It’s suicide. On average, one person takes their own life every 12 minutes.

Tuesday at Le Moyne College, elected official issued a proclamation marking World Suicide Prevention Day in Onondaga County. Following the proclamation, a vigil was held at the Panasci Family Chapel on campus.

Tuesday was all about creating community awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding suicide, all by turning the region purple and teal.

“It’s been a tough thing to go through, but nowadays, you know, it happened years back. Knowing that, you know, being able to come to events like this and seeing that I’m not alone and other people have been through similar things has just been, it’s so comforting and so heartwarming to see,” said Rachel Fish, the vigil organizer. She also lost her cousin to suicide.

Every year, more than nine million people also experience thoughts of suicide.
