Contact/MHA offer groundbreaking Mental Health First Aid training
Onondaga County is one of only two locations in New York State offering Mental Health First Aid, a groundbreaking public education training that reduces the stigma about mental illness and teaches people how to respond to a person in crisis. Contact Community Services and the Mental Health Association, with funding and training support from the Onondaga County Department of Mental Health, are preparing police, school staff, human services professionals, and other community members to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Contact/MHA partner with WCNY-TV and Excellus to bring attention to veterans’ challenges
Throughout American history, service members have returned home from combat to face re-entry challenges of reconnecting with loved ones, resuming their jobs, or coping with physical and psychological wounds. They also face challenges unique to the particular war or conflict. Soldiers engaged in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11 have faced the stress of redeployment, financial and employment issues, and hidden injuries such as post-traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic brain injury.
A locally-produced documentary, Our Veterans and Their Families: 21st Century Challenges will explore many of these issues on Monday, May 24th at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV.

Contact focuses on social and emotional learning (SEL) with summer training institute
Contact will hold its first Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Institute in July and August and its second annual SEL Summit in November. SEL is a process for helping children—and adults—develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness.

Contact offers 24/7 coverage for HelpLine and MHA info and referral services
Contact Community Services is now providing 24-hour coverage for two vital community resources: Helpline, Onondaga County’s information and referral (I & R) service; and the Mental Health Association’s I & R service. We are also updating and expanding online databases for both.

Children 1st receives state grant
Contact/Mental Health Association’s Children 1st program has received a $20,000 grant, renewable for up to five years, from theNew York State Unified Court System. The Children 1st! program is a six- hour class for parents involved in divorce, separation, or custody proceedings. The primary goal is to teach parents how reduce the stress of family changes and protect their children from the negative effects of ongoing parental conflict.
