Successful STEP Program Expands to 3rd and 6th Grades
- "Thank you for supporting and believing in this struggling student."
- "I see a change in my grandson."
- "[The program] got my daughter to have an open mind about herself."
Success with fourth and fifth graders has led to expansion of our STEP program to third and sixth grades this fall. Success Through Early Prevention (STEP), presented in partnership with the Syracuse City School District, is an alternative education program designed for students experiencing behavior problems that interfere with classroom instruction. Short-term participation and limited class size enable children and families to receive necessary supports during STEP and after transition back to the home school.
Parent involvement is a vital part of STEP. Parent engagement in the program is often predictive of the child's success, according to STEP staff. According to a survey of parents, they felt that the staff listened to them and kept them involved. The communication among parents, school staff and STEP staff is a strong element of the program and provides consistency in responding to behavioral issues at home and school.
The new third-grade classroom is located at LeMoyne Elementary School and the sixth-grade program at Grant Middle School. The fourth-grade classroom will remain at Hughes Magnet School and fifth grade at Delaware Elementary School.
